Ring-Tailed Lemur
It's the first time a baby ring-tailed lemur has been born at the zoo.

The baby, with its pointed nose, furry ears and long, striped tail, does not yet have a name, because it is still too early to be able to determine its gender.

The new addition is spending its time clinging to its mother's belly, said Milton Ness, Valley Zoo veterinarian.

"Baby is nursing well ... mother is doing well. One of the things you have to observe is that these mothers are very active. An unhealthy baby can't hang on for the ride that moms give them."

The ring-tailed lemur, native to the island of Madagascar, is an endangered species. The animals grow to about 16 inches in length and weigh about seven pounds.

The Valley Zoo has been home to ring-tailed lemurs since 1995 and has three males and two females, all of which were born at other centres.

It also has a number of other types of lemurs that are not on the endangered list, including a newly born red-fronted lemur.

They all live in a new, $2-million enclosure that includes an outdoor island and a moat.

Both babies can be viewed by visitors to the zoo, although officials warn it's difficult to see the newborns since the mothers tend to hide them when strangers are around.
