Edmonton Valley Zoo's tiger succumbs to respiratory tract infection.
EDMONTON, October 29 -- It is with great sadness the Valley Zoo announces the loss of Boris, its Amur (Siberian) tiger.
On Monday, October 27, Boris succumbed to a non-responsive lower respiratory tract infection that intensive therapy could not resolve. "We did everything possible to try to help him get better," said Dr. Milton Ness the Valley Zoo veterinarian. "We had been treating Boris for several weeks, drawing on the North American veterinarian expertise available in dealing with tigers. This is a very sad time for all of us."
Results of his post mortem examination will be available next week. "We always make sure we completely understand exactly what happened, so we can take every step possible to ensure our animals receive nothing but the very best medical care," added Ness.
Boris was born at the Granby Zoo in Quebec August 7, 1999 and was moved to the Valley Zoo on May 12, 2006 as part of the Species Survival program. He was known to staff as playful and intelligent and will be greatly missed by his care providers.
The Valley Zoo was anticipating the arrival of a second tiger this fall, however put the transfer on hold while it cared for Boris. The Zoo will now move forward with its work in the Species Survival program in arranging the transfer of the tiger.
Amur (Siberian) tigers are critically endangered; with an estimated 431 to 529 cats in the wild.
