The word ‘Armadillo’ is of Spanish origin and refers to the armour-like shell of these animals. Three-banded Armadillos take their name from the three hinged bands on their backs. The hinges allow them to curl up and protect themselves from predators.
The Three-banded Armadillo is the only Armadillo that can roll itself into a complete ball, which is its defense mechanism against attack. Often it will leave its shell open just enough for the attacker’s nose or paw to poke through. The Armadillo will then slam its shell shut, clamping down tightly, which causes injury to the intruder. Due to over hunting and loss of habitat, the Three-banded Armadillo is threatened in the wild. |
