Eclectus Parrots are known as the most colour dimorphic Parrot in the world. The males are always a bright green, and the females a bright red. This extreme colour difference between the sexes is unusual and the males and females were once considered to be two different species of birds.
They are highly intelligent and can easily learn to mimic speech. Like most Parrots, they require a large amount of social interaction and stimulation to stay happy and healthy. They have a longer digestive tract that most Parrots and require a diet high in fresh fruit and vegetables. Eclectus Parrots nest deep in the trunk of large rainforest trees and they normally nest throughout the year. Even though the Eclectus Parrots’ numbers are presently stable, it is important to recognise that habitat loss and the pet trade are two threats that could easily lessen the wild Parrot population. |
