Blue-tongued Skinks are native to Australia, but are also found in New Guinea and Tasmania. They inhabit semi-desert, mixed woodland, and scrub lands.
They show little aggression and are very docile creatures. They are shy and secretive and seldom stray far from their shelters, which consist of hollow logs and ground debris. They use their claws to cling to logs and rocks. The must peculiar behavior of a Blue-tongued Skink is the use of their bright blue tongue. When disturbed, it gapes its mouth open and sticks out its blue tongue, puffs up its body, and hisses loudly. Another behavior possessed by the Blue-tongued Skink is the ability to lose its tail during a confrontation. It can then re-grow its tail. - Taken from Animal Diversity Web. |
