Bactrian Camels were domesticated over 4,500 years ago in Bactria, present day Northern Iran. They were used as pack animals as they could carry over 200 kg (450 lbs). They live in the Gobi Desert where temperatures range from minus 29 C in the winter to highs of 38 C in the summer months.
Camels’ humps store fat which helps them survive when there is little food to be found. And their big, padded feet work like snowshoes to keep the Camel from sinking into the sand. There are only a few herds left in the wild, making Bactrian Camels endangered. |
