Lucy was born in Sri Lanka, and found as an orphan. Her exact year of birth is unknown, but is guessed as being 1975.
Painting was introduced to Lucy in the early 1990s as an enrichment to her daily schedule to help keep her mentally and physically stimulated. Dozens of elephants around the world showcase their art in top galleries, and these works of abstract expressionism command a high price. Each elephant is individual and unique, and that is reflected in the originality of composition represented by each artist.
Lucy enjoys painting, and her work is prized as it is highly original. Her paintings include brush motions with horizontal lines, dabs, and circles, which are rare for an elephant to demonstrate. The zookeepers who work with Lucy say that the paintings created with these unusual brushstrokes are done when she is feeling very happy, content, and goofy.
Lucy is inspired by much in her life, including her daily walks through the Valley Zoo grounds, and her interaction with keepers and other animals.
Not knowing what to do when she first began painting, she would believe the paints to be food and attempted to eat them. She then moved on to using her trunk as a brush and working with paper on the floor. She has now evolved to lots of different paintbrushes and rollers, and works on an easel.
Her favourite colours are all bright and vivid, and include darker tones such as ocean blue and hunter green. When she doesn't like a colour she will refuse it, and when she decides she is finished with a certain colour, or the painting altogether, she'll hand the brush back to the keeper. But not before doing her best to paint everyone around her too!
The staff at the Valley Zoo enjoy watching her painting almost as much as she enjoys doing it, and we hope for many more years of successful artistry.
